Light & Shadow

The Sun represents the quintessential source of power for life on Earth. We perceive its qualities of light and heat in extreme variation. Depending on our perspective we can be dazzled by a brilliant sunset or be blinded by intense light. We can be comforted by a pleasant warm sensation or cooked by an oppressive desiccating heat. Understanding how your deck will be situated in relation to the sun will be critical in crafting a comfortable space.

Tree canopies can act as wonderful filters for the sun, allowing a diffused spotted light to penetrate onto your deck surfacec. Be aware of how the quality of sunlight will be affected by the time of day and in different seasons. Shade features like arbors and pergolas can be introduced to reduce the intensity of mid afternoon sun light. Too much shade can also be undesirable, enveloping your deck in a dark, cold and depressing environment. Artificial lights can be added to set a mood and make your deck more functional at night. Soft glowing lights mounted to rail posts may communicate the definition of your deck by night and act as a safety feature to highlight the position of stair risers.
