Introduction to Thermally Modified Wood

Wood can be thermally modified or heat treated to improve dimensional stability and decay resistance without the use of chemicals. This process has been used in Europe for over 15 years as an alternative to pressure treated wood for outdoor uses such as decks. Thermally modified wood is gaining in popularity in North America as well.

Through unique chemical, physical, and biological changes, wood sugars are converted into a natural substance that cannot be digested by insects or support the growth of mold or fungus. Yet it retains the natural integrity and beauty of the wood.

Any wood species can be used with the result of a slightly darker color and a slightly lighter weight.
