Reductive Design

One simple method for green building is the efficient use of materials in construction.  Using reductive design you can build a strong deck with the fewest number of parts possible by fully utilizing the properties of each component of construction. We have found that by using more substantial materials such as 2x10 Southern Pine instead of 2x8 Ponderosa Pine allows your joists to span an extra 5’-3”.  This means in many cases that you can eliminate a center beam along with a number of support posts and footings.  The added benefit is less labor, lower materials costs, and a cleaner streamlined design.  Reducing materials and construction waste means a few less trees need to be cut down and less treated wood will ultimately be added to landfills.

Another important distinction in environmental friendly deck building is to create a deck that will last.  Decks should be thought of as permanent additions to a house.  A well built deck that is taken care of can easily last 30-50 years.  We have seen way too many 5 year old decks being torn down because they weren’t properly designed to begin with or maintained.  Decks are not disposable.  It isn’t only expensive to build and rebuild decks it is also wasteful and environmentally irresponsible.  Before building a deck you should take the measures necessary to ensure that it will last.  This may mean using stronger framing materials, corrosion resistant hardware, low maintenance decking, and most importantly a thoughtful design that will satisfy the needs of future homeowners.
