Types
There is only one type of Cypress tree grown in the U.S. although it is sometimes marketed under other names such as Gulf Cypress, Red Cypress, Tidewater Red Cypress, White Cypress, Black Cypress, Cow Cypress and Yellow Cypress.
Grades
Even though Cypress is coniferous and considered a softwood it is graded by The National Hardwood Lumber Association (NHLA) and The Southern Cypress Manufacturers Association (SCMA) because it grows alongside mostly hardwood trees.
Select Cypress – The best face is mostly clear of knots and defects.
#2 Common Cypress – The best face will have sound encased knots and some vertical grain that does not detract the appearance of the wood.
Pecky Cypress – This is a very unique product because it contains cavities of varying length and depth on its best face. Pecky occurs when the wood is attacked by fungus resulting in lens shaped cavities throughout the surface. Once the tree is cut the rot will cease to spread, leaving a unique three dimensional relief. This is principally used for interior paneling |
