Defining Barriers to Movement

How can you control the direction of human movement on your deck? Most decks will use rails to define the perimeter, but what about the rest of the deck? Subtle details like the direction you apply the decking can psychologically emphasize motion in a particular way. People feel more comfortable walking in the same direction as the decking like following lines painted on a highway. Diagonally applied decking can focus attention towards a particular space or view away from the house.

Using a trim board or a racetrack pattern to surround the deck can offer a nice finishing touch and suggest the perimeter of your deck like a warning track on a baseball field. Benches and planters can express a barrier to movement to protect a certain space from approaching traffic from the rear or flank. A short rail can help add visual definition and maintain views for a low deck where guardrails are not required. Use these tools to keep people moving comfortably in and around the deck and to set boundaries for social areas.
