Geometry is one of the world’s oldest sciences. It is a part of mathematics concerned with size, shape, and relative position of figures with properties of space. Most man made structures are built from a repeated use of uniform materials in order to create a consistent geometric form. Think of a wall built from 2x6 studs framed at 16" on center. This construction will result in a wall of a constant height and depth.
Symmetry is the expression of a balanced visual geometry. As a result symmetry can introduce a simplicity that is safe and familiar to most people. Get yourself a notebook of ¼" graph paper and a ruler. Experiment by drawing different forms at ¼" = 1’ scale. Begin by drawing a simple square. Imagine how this space would function as a deck. The square corners are certainly familiar as with most rooms, but they are not very functional or interesting. Using symmetry and geometry can provide balance and a sense of coherence to your deck design. These will be important tools to use in designing a deck; however you shouldn’t allow it to dominate your design sensitivities. |
