In design language we can define any material object as a form. The word form refers to a 3 dimensional shape. The world we live in is populated by a countless variety of forms of which we are all quite familiar. Think about a tire as an example of a form. Its shape, size, and general characteristics allow it to perform its intended purpose: to rotate and provide traction. You can begin to think of your deck design as a composition of specific forms in this way. Allow the shape of your deck design to be determined primarily by its functional requirements.
Legendary architect Louis Sullivan developed the idea that form should follow function as a logical and utilitarian approach to design. His thought was that beauty is useful. Nature shows us a variety of interesting and compelling forms; but there purpose transcends appearance; they serve important and useful functions. As you begin to contemplate and express specific forms in your design you will want to consciously be aware of there purpose. Think about how you want to use your deck. Do certain forms seem more practical than others? |
