Privacy

Most people don’t feel secure or comfortable in environments where they can be watched from afar. Your aim is to create a peaceful and relaxing environment. This is why establishing privacy should be central to your design. If you live within the confines of a secluded forest move on to the next article. For the rest of us who have to deal with nosy neighbors in crowded subdivisions here are a few suggestions.

Isolate areas that are open to a field of vision from neighboring houses or nearby roads. How close are these positions and where are they located? How can you conceal these voids? Guard rails will offer a subtle barrier. If you still feel too exposed you may need to consider a privacy fence or pergola. Does your yard have any fences, trees, or landscaping to shield you from view? You may need to balance your desire to maintain your own views and connection to the landscape with a pension for privacy. Try to consider subtle features that can create a screen rather than an absolute barrier.
