| I've got my deck outfitted with vinyl railing all around, but I need to make a gate for it. Should I just buy the 4x4 vinyl sleeves and put another railing between them and hinge it? Seems to me I'd need quite a big gap for the gate to be able to swing shut without hitting the corner of the sleeve since it's 4" wide. I have a bunch of railing ballisters left from installing the railing and I was wondering if I could construct something using them, but I wouldn't know what to use to hold them in place if I didn't buy a new section of railing. I thought of using vinyl downspout, but it has the ridges on it and looks too much like a gutter. I'd have to put wood inside it too, no doubt, to add strength.

Pat,
I would just make the gate out of your composite. I think it will look really good. Plus, it is a gate, it's ok if it doesn't match the railing. Of course I made my rails out of the 2x4 composite, so I had 2x4s laying around left over to test with. You'd have to buy some of the 2x4 to match yours. You only have the decking material right now, right?

I ended up making it out of Veranda railing like the rest of the railing. Turned out good I guess. I painted a piece of composite decking to use as a gate stop. Here is a photo.

I had to use a turnbuckle to keep it from sagging on the opposite end of the hinges, but that's pretty standard procedure I guess.

| You can also do it the easy way and order a vinyl gate. Endurance vinyl railing for example makes the gate up to 4' including hardware and lock. Clemens

Pat, that looks great! And since you didn't use the heavy composite, it won't sag as bad as mine. Nicely done!

| Thanks, brandonriffel. It really needed that turnbuckle going corner to corner to keep it from sagging. I'm just glad it's done. Inspector dropped by to approve and said the deck looks beautiful. :-)
