Cedar holds both nails and screws well. Nails will be faster and cheaper to install but may produce squeaking as the decking shrinks. Screws are a more labor intensive alternative to nailing, and may result in small cracks to form around the crew head. Hot dipped galvanized, aluminum, and stainless steel screws and nails can be used. Electroplated and copper nails should not be used because they will rust or bleed metals that can react with the oils and tannins in cedar to create stains. Use 10D nails for 2x6 8D nails for 5/4x6.
